We will again be participating in Samaritan's Purses' Operation Christmas Child. If you would like to participate, you can either pick up a shoebox at a Celebration Singles event or you can pack an ordinary shoebox.

Note: if you do not like shopping, please feel free to make a monetary donation and one of our designated shoppers will fill a shoebox for you. Please consider including $7-8 for shipping costs.

DEADLINE FOR BRINGING IN SHOEBOXES IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH.

PACKING A SHOE BOX:

1. Use an empty shoe box (standard size, please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift.

2. Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14. Print out the appropriate boy/girl label by downloading the artwork to the right. Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape the label to the top of your box. (Visit the website to find the right label: http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/Pack_A_Shoe_Box/)

3. Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child. Use the gift ideas provided below:

TOYS
Small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small Etch-a-Sketch (registered trademark), toys that light up or make noise (include extra batteries), Slinky (registered trademark), etc.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
Pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pads, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.

HYGIENE ITEMS
Toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.

OTHER
Hard candy and lollipops (please double bag all candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (solar or with extra batteries)

A PERSONAL NOTE
In a separate envelope, you may include a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include a name and address, your child may write back).

Used or damaged items, war-related items such as guns, knives or military figures, chocolate or food, out-of-date candy, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items such as snowglobes or glass containers, aerosol cans
4. Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can give online by using our “Follow Your Box Donation” option, or you can write a check to Samaritan’s Purse (note “OCC” on memo line) and place it in an envelope on top of the gift items inside your box. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoe box, please make one combined donation.

5. Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and drop off at the Collection Center nearest you during our collection week, November 14-21.

Friday, October 28th - Bible Discussion with George and Ray

7:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room

Ray is going to be sharing highlights from his Summer 2011 mission trip to Mexico. Assisted with a medical mission trip to the city of Babicora, about 375 miles southwest of Juarez. (Ray says +/- 100 miles since he's not sure about the number.)

This is the second year he has participated in a mission trip to this city.

Come and find out about his experiences with horses and playgrounds, an unusual patient waiting room, and Ray's unique approach to devotionals.

Afterwards we will continue our fellowship at Max's Allegheny Tavern.

CELEBRATION SINGLES FALL KICKOFF - Friday, October 14th

Registration starts at 7 p.m. A prize is being given for the person who brings the most people to kickoff.

Special Events: Baked Goods Contest, Ping Pong Tournament, Sundae Bar, Open Play Volleyball, Board Games and more

We would appreciate it if some folks would help us out by bringing a food or beverage to share.

Additional details below:

The ping pong tournament will start at 8 p.m.

***Baking contest*** - Baked goods must arrive by 8 p.m. to be eligible to be in the contest.

Here are the rules for the Baked Goods Contest which will be held the night of Kickoff - Friday, October 14th:

1. All baked goods to be considered for the contest must arrive in the lobby of Allegheny Center Alliance Church by 8 p.m. on Friday, October 14th.

2. Items must be dessert items, not muffins or breads. No frozen desserts or ice creams.

3. All items must be homemade, not purchased.

4. Each person may submit a maximum of one entry to the contest.

5. Six servings must be submitted for judging along with the name and a brief description of the item.

6. Prizes will be awarded for the best dessert overall, best tasting, most creative, and best presentation (appearance). Judges decisions will be final. (The challenge has been thrown down. Who will pick it up?)

Hiking instead of Biking this Weekend

Saturday, October 15th - Lunch and Hiking at McConnell's Mills (Ohiopyle Biking has been replaced/canceled)

10:45 a.m. - Meet at the Park and Ride in CranberryTwp. (At the intersection of rte 19 & 228. Next to Burger King.)

We will leave promptly at 11:00 a.m.

If you can't make it there we will be meeting at the Kildoo Picnic area at the top of the steps by the mill.

Bring a bag lunch. We will eat and then walk down the steps to the mill and go hiking. Wear comfortable shoes. For safety please NO FLIP FLOPS.

This is a call for “help.” Volunteers, that is from the ACAC IT dept.

Here is the request from our IT manager—(Kelly Eickenberg):

We want to publish an electronic directory for the congregation. Starting this Sat., and for the next two weekends, we will be collecting updated information from people as well as taking their photo. Our goal is to do this in three places; Children’s, UP, and ACAC main building. At each station I hope to have two people. One to help the people locate their information, answer questions, and help the photographer log numbers with names, and the other to take the pictures. You do not have to be a professional photographer for our purposes. We will have a nice background and do our best but we are not advertising or “selling” these photos as we did in the past when we used Olan Mills and like companies.

If this is something you would be willing to help with any of these weekends please let me know. The gaps in the schedule are as follows:

CELEBRATION SINGLES FALL KICKOFF - Friday, October 14th

Registration starts at 7 p.m. A prize is being given for the person who brings the most people to kickoff.

Special Events: Baked Goods Contest, Ping Pong Tournament, Sundae Bar, Open Play Volleyball, Board Games and more

We would appreciate it if some folks would help us out by bringing a food or beverage to share.

The ping pong tournament will start at 8 p.m.

***Baking contest*** - Baked goods must arrive by 8 p.m. to be eligible to be in the contest.

Here are the rules for the Baked Goods Contest which will be held the night of Kickoff - Friday, October 14th:

1. All baked goods to be considered for the contest must arrive in the lobby of Allegheny Center Alliance Church by 8 p.m. on Friday, October 14th.

2. Items must be dessert items, not muffins or breads. No frozen desserts or ice creams.

3. All items must be homemade, not purchased.

4. Each person may submit a maximum of one entry to the contest.

5. Six servings must be submitted for judging along with the name and a brief description of the item.

6. Prizes will be awarded for the best dessert overall, best tasting, most creative, and best presentation (appearance). Judges decisions will be final. (The challenge has been thrown down. Who will pick it up?)

Note: some additions to the rules may be necessary as Kickoff approaches. Feel free to email us at celebrationsingles@gmail.com if you have any questions.

We will leave promptly at 11:15.

If you can't make it there we will be meeting at the Kildoo Picnic area at the top of the steps by the mill.

Bring a bag lunch. We will eat and then walk down the steps to the mill and go hiking. Wear comfortable shoes. For safety please NO FLIP FLOPS.

Audrey Craig went home to be with the Lord yesterday, September 21 at the age of 70 years. Her arrangements are as follows:

Visitation – Friday, September 23 – 2pm – 9pm - Sperling Funeral -430 Cedar Avenue;

Funeral – Saturday, September 24 – ACAC Sanctuary – 11am with Pastor Rock officiating.

Please remember her husband, Dale, and their children in your prayers.

Ohiopyle Biking Adventure this Saturday

Saturday, August 13th 2011 - Biking at Ohiopyle

Meet at the Ohiopyle Train Station/Office at 10:30 a.m.
Note: we will not be meeting at the church. Please make your own arrangements for transportation in advance.

We will leave at 11 a.m. to bike to Confluence (about 11 miles).
This will take about 1 hour.
We will meet for lunch at Sisters Cafe in Confluence so please bring lunch money.

We will probably spend about an hour at lunch and enjoying the gazebo in Confluence and then bike back.

Please bring a bike if you have one. If not, there are places where you can rent bikes for the day or a few hours.

There are places to swim, shower, and change clothes at Ohiopyle.

If it is raining very heavily, we will probably cancel. If it is raining lightly, we WILL ride. Hopefully we will have a nice sunny day. Please pray for that.

We are excited to announce that Hope & Passion Ministries will be having a big, interdenominational event for both men and women this fall! Anxiety Undone will happen Saturday evening, November 12 at the Greensburg Alliance Church of Greensburg, PA.

Mark your calendars! We planned a location so that many of our friends and stakeholders from churches all over the area may arrive easily (and even find a local hotel if necessary).

We ask you to be in prayer for the event which will touch many lives through the power of God's Word. Anxiety is an issue we struggle with in a fast-paced, high-tech, excessive, and lonely culture amidst the backdrop of global unrest and financial concerns. However, our God is able to relieve our hearts and minds, and really and ultimately undo anxiety for us! Shelli is seeking God's heart for this powerful message.

If you would like to be a part of the planning committee for this event, please respond to this email or give Karen a call at the number below. We need planners and church coordinators.

Tim McShane passed away suddenly last Monday. In the obituary pages of the Post Gazette, it says that his viewing is tomorrow (7/4/11) from 6-8pm and Wednesday (7/6/11) from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Thomas Nied funeral home in Swissvale.

God called him out of the US from a successful business career and placed both he and his wife Mary into full time ministry in Greece. Some of his experiences include weekly soup kitchen ministry to refugees in Athens, ministry to Muslim refugees, as well as Bible distribution and Evangelistic outreaches throughout Greece. Though in its developmental stages, he also has an interest in Church planting which would include training Greek national church planters and evangelists.

In Greece, roughly 85% to 90% of the women involved in prostitution are foreigners who have been trafficked there on the false promise of a better life. On the other hand, male prostitutes and transvestites, equally in need of the love of Christ, are mainly Greeks. Such a lifestyle is neither pleasurable nor, in most instances, chosen, as many presuppose. Sexual exploitation is a global dilemma and despite its shocking statistics, Jesus Christ offers hope for restoration through the ministry of Nea Zoi. Viorica is originally from the country of Moldova, is married, and fluently speaks 5 languages. She has been living in Athens for the past 14 years and will be sharing about the ministry of Nea Zoi and how God has involved her in this life-transforming effort.

Bible Discussion this Friday
